Elementary School Music Programs:
The Pacific Grove area is blessed with plenty of music options for your budding elementary school virtuoso…
- The elementary schools (Robert Down and Forest Grove) offer free music lessons during and after school beginning in fifth grade, for string and wind instruments. The students perform together at concerts which showcase how much they students have learned. Instruments are available for rent, or in some cases may be lent by the school district. For more information, please contact Dave Hoffman at dhoffman@pgusd.org.
- What about before fifth grade? Most PG students simply wait until 5th grade to begin their music instruction through the elementary school program, but for those wanting to get an early start...
- Private lessons are available for virtually any instrument – piano, clarinet, violin, guitar… Click here to find a list of some of the local music teachers.
- Some students who begin private lessons prior to 5th grade also participate in Orchestra in the Schools as a 4th grader. Orchestra in the Schools is a program for Monterey area students who do not have their own school-based music program, to introduce the students to playing in an orchestra. Practice is held Mondays at All Saints Day School from September through May. For more information click here: http://www.asds.org/orchestra
What happens after fifth grade?
- The Pacific Grove Middle School program is an award-winning program.
- Five middle school music classes are offered: beginning and advanced orchestra, beginning and advanced band, and chorus. All five count as academic classes and meet every day.
- Even kids who did not play an instrument in elementary school are welcome to begin playing an instrument in sixth grade.
- When you and your student are choosing 6th grade classes, to participate in music you need to select one of the music classes--usually beginning band, beginning orchestra or chorus.
